Yoga For Diabetes
Diabetes is a life style related metabolic disease that prevents the body from converting digested food into the energy needed for daily activities. Diabetes is caused by failure of the pancreas to produce insulin, a hormone that allows blood sugar (glucose) to store or use glucose, our body's main source of energy.
Diabetes is one of the several life style related chronic conditions with an end result of complications that are related to early ageing changes, which in turn results in blockage of small and large arteries.
There are an estimated 100 million diabetics in the world of which around 70 million belongs to heavily populated developing countries. Today, health professionals are bewildered by the rapidity with which diabetes with its associations such as obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, triglycerides are assuming epidemic proportions. This phenomenon is more prominent amongst Indians both in India and abroad (migrant), which is attributable to the rapidly changing trends of globalization and demands on coping skills leading to enormous stress.
Diabetes can be prevented by maintaining a good lifestyle and avoiding stress. You could prevent diabetes by avoidingeating heavy spicy, oily foods and sweets; Cigarette smoking, Alcohol, non-vegetarian foods, fizzy cool drinks; Sedentary lifestyle with no physical activity; Excessive sleeping or loss of sleep; avoiding emotional upsurges such as aggressive behavior, anger, fear, tension, worry etc.

How Yoga Would Work to Help Diabetes
1. Glucagons secretion is enhanced by stress. Yoga effectively reduces stress, thus reducing glucagons and possibly improving insulin action.
2. Weight loss induced by yoga is a well accepted mechanism.
3. Muscular relaxation, development and improved blood supply to muscles enhances insulin receptor expression on muscles causing increased glucose uptake by muscles and thus reducing blood sugar.
4. Blood pressure plays a great role in development of diabetic and related complications, which is proven to be benefited by yoga. The same holds true for increased cholesterol levels.
5. Yoga reduces adrenaline, noradrenalin and cortisol in blood, which are termed as ‘stress hormones’. This is a likely mechanism of improvement in insulin action.
6. Many yogic postures do produce stretch on the pancreas, which is likely to stimulate the pancreatic function.

How Yoga Helps in the control of Diabetes Mellitus
For diabetes we use those ásanas which need to bring deep rest to the pancreas and release the práďa blocks. Hence the ásanas used under special techniques for DM either stretch, compress, or twist the abdominal area, so that you may bring your awareness to the pancreatic area, focus and then defocus to give very deep rest to pancreas.
Regular practice of yogasanas reduces blood sugar levels, blood pressure, weight, and further health complications.
